🤔Myth Busting BINGO
Let's play BINGO... how many of the following have you been told?
Have you heard any other myths? Let me know in the comments below ⬇️
Not only are most of the myths we hear untrue (and downright laughable), but they can be super damaging to the Neurodivergent community and negatively impact how the rest of the world perceives us and what we can do.
⭐ Myth: Neurodivergence is rare.
Fact: Neurodivergence is more common than people think, with around 1 in 7 people being neurodivergent. (And that's just those who KNOW they are neurodivergent... I'm looking at you 7 year long ADHD wait list 👀)
⭐ Myth: Neurodivergent children will struggle in school.
Fact: With the right support, many neurodivergent children excel in academics and beyond, for many neurodivergent children, wanting to learn isn't the problem, it is the challenge of only being taught 'one way' and the pressure of socialising with peers that can impact a child's schooling.
⭐ Myth: All neurodivergent people are the same.
Fact: Each human on the planet has a unique set of strengths and challenges - the same goes for Neurodivergent folk - when you've met one... you've met one!
⭐ Myth: Neurodivergence is caused by bad parenting.
Fact: Neurodivergence is a difference in neurotype and is not related to parenting styles. Parents who are blamed for their child's struggles can often feel shame and guilt. This is extremely unfair and damaging to parents' confidence. No parenting choices 'cause' neurodivergence. However, most neurodivergent children will have one or more family members who are also neurodivergent, which is important to note when providing support.
⭐ Myth: You can outgrow it.
Fact: Neurodivergence is lifelong, we are born neurodivergent babies and will (with the right tools) thrive to live long, healthy and fulfilling lives as autistic adults, whether independently or with support.
To provide the best support possible to the neurodivergent people in our lives (including ourselves!), we must educate ourselves, embrace their uniqueness, and advocate for inclusivity.
